It's a great way to explore the region and there are many activities you can do en route which we can help you plan and arrange.

Itinerary

Day 1

Travel to Portmeirion on the edge of Snowdonia independently. If you are arriving by train let us know your joureny times and we can arrange a courtesy taxi to meet you at the station and take you to Portmeirion.

Portmeirion was created by the architect Clough Williams-Ellis from 1925 to 1976. He wanted to show how a naturally beautiful site could be developed without spoiling it. Aside from its iconic architecture, scenic surroundings and vast woodland gardens, Portmeirion is home to hip hotels, a huddle of historic cottages, a spa and award winning restaurants.

Day 2

See the dawn break over the mountains of Meirionnydd. Watch the rising tide fill the Dwyryd estuary, covering the golden sands from shore to shore.

Travel to Porthmadog Harbour station for a return trip on the Ffestiniog Railway, the world's oldest narrow gauge railway with almost 200 years of history, taking you on a 13½-mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Climb over 700 feet from sea level into the mountains through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests, past lakes and waterfalls, round tight bends (even a complete spiral) clinging to the side of the mountain or tunnelling through it.

The remainder of the day is at leisure to explore the iconic architecture, woodland walks, galleries, Shell Grotto, Mermaid Spa, shops and usual plants around Portmeirion. Indulge your memories of cult 1960s television series “The Prisoner” which was filmed here.

Day 3

Return to Harbour Station for a trip on The Welsh Highland Railway, the UK's longest heritage railway which runs for 25 miles to Caernarfon, through the stunning Aberglaslyn Pass, past the picture postcard village of Beddgelert and the foot of Snowdon. Passengers ride in some of the most comfortable carriages on any heritage railway in the UK.

There is time for lunch in Caernarfon, close to the castle.

Day 4

After a final breakfast at Portmeirion before returning home or you may wish to extend your trip.
