This is a wonderful family holiday that will give your children a taste of the Continent and in particular Europe's magnificent mountains in Switzerland, including the Matterhorn. An unforgettable rail journey that delivers amazing views and feats of railway engineering and excellence.
ITINERARY
Day 1 – London-Brussels-Cologne
The holiday begins when you step aboard the Eurostar train and travel via Brussels to Cologne for an overnight stay with time to enjoy the city and its famous cathedral.
Day 2 – Cologne-Hug the Rhine-Basel-Chur
A day spent enjoying the wonderful views as you travel by train along the classic rail route which follows the River Rhine between Germany and Switzerland before arriving at the charming city of Chur, your base for the next 3 nights.
Day 3 – Free Day with Rail Pass (kids under 16 free!!!!!)
A day to make the most of your Swiss Pass with unlimited travel on trains, trams, postbuses and lake steamers. You can visit the nearby resorts of Arosa and Klosters or take the children to the nearby Heidi Village and introduce them to this classic story.
Day 4 – Bernina Express Return
Chur is the home of the UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway and its famous Bernina Express runs a full-day return excursion from Chur to Tirano in Italy - a route which is the only North-South Alpine rail crossing with a summit rising to 2,253 metres and boasting numerous spiral tunnels and viaducts – great views and a memorable rail journey.
Day 5 – Glacier Express to Brig
Take the slowest express train in the world – the Glacier Express to Brig. The speed and the huge windows of the train allow you to savour the fabulous views as you travel over the Oberalp Pass before arriving in Brig for a 3-night stay.
Day 6 – Free Day with Rail Pass
Use your Swiss Pass to enjoy the sights and area around Brig that lie within the Rhône Valley.
Day 7 – Brig to Zermatt and Matterhorn
A return journey to Zermatt, the home of the Matterhorn. Optional journeys include travel by rack railway into the mountains on the Gornergrat Railway or a ride on the Kleine Matterhorn cable car. Extra charges apply for optional journeys.
Day 8 – Brig-Basle-Cologne
Travel home by train via Cologne for an overnight stay, providing another scenic journey along the Rhine.
Day 9 – Cologne-Brussels-London
By train to Brussels to connect with your Eurostar train home.
