This classic tour gives ample opportunity to explore by train the varied scenic sights Switzerland has to offer. Using your first class Swiss Travel Pass, enjoy memorable journeys through mountain and lake landscapes and traditional villages.
ITINERARY
Day 1 – To Cologne
Depart on mid-morning Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels, then by ICE service to Cologne for an overnight stay.
Day 2 – Graubünden
Leaving Cologne after breakfast you head south to Basle. From here all your rail travel in Switzerland will be in first class using the unlimited Swiss Travel Pass provided. Leaving Basle, you travel to Chur, the oldest city in Switzerland. Stay in this charming historic city for 5 nights and your hotel is in the traffic free area of the old town.
Day 3 – At Leisure
A day allowing you the chance to explore Chur and the surrounding area using the UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railways network.
Day 4 - Bernina Express
A full day excursion from Chur to Tirano in northern Italy. This route is the only North-South Alpine rail crossing and the summit of the line lies at an altitude of 2253m (7391ft). The panoramic windows of your first class coach give you a wide vista and the many spirals and tunnels all make this a wonderful day out.
Days 5 & 6 – Leisure Time
A further 2 days at leisure to explore the region using your first class Swiss Travel Pass.
Day 7 – Glacier Express
Leave mid-morning on the world famous Glacier Express to Brig. This is one of Switzerland’s most scenic journeys that delivers the best views through its panoramic windows so sit back, relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery. Brig will be your base for the next 4 nights.
Days 8 to 10 – Free Time
Free time based in Brig to enjoy day trips to such destinations as Locarno and Zermatt.
Day 11 – Bernese Oberland
A short trip by train takes you from the Rhone Valley, via the Lötschberg Tunnel, into the Bernese Oberland and the lakeside resort of Thun. The region is home to the peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and the 12th Century Castle in Thun dominates the town.
Days 12 – Free Time
Free time based in Thun with the chance to enjoy visits to such destinations as Brienz and Lauterbrunnen.
Day 13 - Bern
A leisurely day's travel to Bern with free time to explore.
Day 14 – To Mainz
You depart Thun after breakfast and make your way via Basle to Mainz for an overnight stay with dinner included.
Day 15 – London
Early morning train from Mainz, via Cologne, will make a connection in Brussels with the Eurostar and you will arrive back into London St Pancras late afternoon.
