Series 2, Episode 4 Great Continental Railway Journeys. This series provides a wonderful window to the many different places in Europe that you can reach and explore by train. On this train journey Michael Portillo goes north to Norway, a route that forms the basis of this interesting 9-day rail holiday which is a scenic route that provides a snapshot of life in Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

ITINERARY

Day 1

Fly to Copenhagen and transfer by train to the city centre hotel for 2 nights.

Day 2

Free day for sightseeing. City sights include the Little Mermaid statue, 17th Century Citadel (Kastallet) and the Amalienborg Palace which is home to the Danish Royal Family. The city is also the location for Tivoli, one of Denmark's most popular attractions. It is an unusual mix of gardens, amusements and restaurants and even has its own fireworks factory supplying the weekly display!

Day 3

Transfer by rail mid-morning via the Oresund Bridge allows you to reach Malmö in just over 30 minutes. Stay 2 nights in the Savoy hotel. It is almost certain that Lenin was a visitor to the hotel en route from Switzerland, where he had been in exile, to St Petersburg having been granted passage through Germany in a sealed train.

Day 4

Day trip from Malmö to Lund. The cathedral here houses an historic timepiece and the covered market offers all the local delicacies such as pickled herring and crayfish.

Day 5

Continuing north on an inter city service to Gothenburg which is Sweden's second city. The city sits on the Göta River and has a strong connection with Scotland. The Gotha Canal starts here and is a west-east waterway across the country. It was constructed by Thomas Telford and is open for pleasure cruises in the summer months.

Day 6

Free day to allow further exploration of the city and a half day trip by train to the power station and waterfalls at Trollhättan.

Day 7

Leaving Gothenburg we follow the west coast northwards and cross into Norway to reach the capital city of Oslo. The city has a wealth of museums (famous sons include Ibsen and Munch) and exhibitions such as the Kon Tiki and Viking Ship charting maritime history. The ski jump at Holmenkollen is reached by metro from the city centre and as well as housing an impressive ski museum there is a new zip-line attraction for thrill seekers!

Day 8

Full day sightseeing in Oslo.

Day 9

Transfer to the airport for early afternoon flight back to London.
