Series 4, Episode 6, Great Continental Rail Journeys. In this final episode in this series Michael Portillo continues to be steered by his 1913 Bradshaw's Guide and returns to Spain to trace the early 20th Century roots of the Spanish Civil War, which divided his own Spanish family and sent his father into exile. A special dispensation to fly to the Balearic island of Mallorca allows Michael to experience spectacular scenic rides aboard a sublime 1912 vintage railway and a 1913 tram.

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Via Paris to Barcelona

Morning Eurostar to Paris, followed by a high speed train to Barcelona, or choose to take Eurostar to Lyon for an easier connection to Barcelona. Three nights in Barcelona.

Day 2 – Barcelona Sightseeing Options

Take the funicular railway and then Montjuïc Cable Car to enjoy the fine views over the city. Before descending why not vist Montjuïc Castle, guided tours are available.

Day 3 – At Leisure in Barcelona

A day of sightseeing in Barcelona. Take the metro to the Palau de la Música Catalana and enjoy a guided tour of this in English. The rest of the day is at leisure, why not visit the Sagrada Família, and sample the many cafes and restaurants of the city. Don’t forget to try Crema Catalania!

Day 4 – Camp de Tarragona

A morning rail journey to Camp de Tarragona, using an Alaria service takes about 30 minutes, from there take a bus or taxi to the city centre. The remainder of the day is at leisure to explore the Roman remains.

Day 5 – To Valencia

Take a slow train from Tarragona, the city centre this time, and enjoy the scenery as you travel to Valencia for a one night say.

Day 6 – Explore Valencia

A full day to explore the city of a 1000 bell towers, admire the bullring and ride the trams. Sample some paella before taking the metro to the airport for an early evening flight to Palma.

Day 7 – Manacor, Mallorca

Take a day trip on the train to Manacor, via Inca. Here you can enjoy a free guided tour to learn about the unique pearl manufacturing process.

Day 8 – The ‘Orange Express’

Ride on the narrow gauge ‘Orange Express’ to Soller, from there take the historic tram to the port. After enjoying the beach return to Palma for a flight back to London.
