Series 4, Episode 2, Great Continental Rail Journeys. In this episode Michael Portillo travels the route of the Trans Alpine railway which was constructed for the Austro Hungarian Empire to link the capital Vienna with a sea port at Trieste.

ITINERARY

Day 1 – To Vienna

Fly from London to Vienna and transfer by train for a 3-night stay at a 3* city centre hotel.

Days 2 & 3 – Explore Vienna

Free days for sightseeing. Amongst the famous sights are the Opera, National Theatre and the cathedral. We can organise an optional escorted tour if required. For evening entertainment take a ride on the famous Prater Wheel with views across the city.

Day 4 – Semmering Route to Graz

Leaving Vienna we head south by train to Graz using the Semmering route with its many bridges, tunnels and viaducts. Stay 2 nights in a 3* centrally located hotel. Rest of the day free for exploring the city.

Day 5 – Schlossbergbahn

Full day based in Graz to explore and ride the Schlossbergbahn. You can also take a bus to visit the Lurgrotte which are Austria’s largest caves.

Day 6 – To Ljubljana

Continue south by train on the only direct daily service to Ljubljana. Based here for 2 nights.

Day 7 – Explore Ljubljana

Free day based in Ljubljana to explore at leisure.

Day 8 – To Trieste

Leaving Ljubljana by train we leave Slovenia and travel to Italy and the sea port of Trieste. Free afternoon to explore this city with its mix of grand and modern architecture. Note that we are unable to issue tickets for the Lubljana to Trieste train journey. These must be purchased locally.

Day 9 – By Rail to Venice

Transfer by train to Venice for an overnight stay.

Day 10 – Flight Home

Lunchtime flight from Venice back to London.
