ITINERARY
Day 1 – Fly to Dallas
Fly from the UK to Dallas for a 2-night stay.
Day 2 – Colourful, Cosmopolitan Dallas
Arrive in Dallas mid-afternoon. We include a CityPASS so that you can visit the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, Reunion Tower Geo-Deck plus either Dallas Zoo OR the Sixth Floor Museum and George W Bush Presidential Library & Museum OR Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden.
Day 3 – Texas Eagle
A 10 hour ride on the Texas Eagle Amtrak service takes you to San Antonio for a 2-night stay.
Day 4 – San Antonio
A day at leisure in San Antonio. Choose to visit the toilet seat museum (yes really!), the Alamo or a college football game.
Day 5 – Sunset Limited
An early start this morning as the three times a week Sunset Limited service departs at 6:30am approximately. Watch the heart of the Lone Star State and the Bayou Country roll past the window. Arrive in New Orleans during the evening for a two night stay.
Day 6 – Swamp Tour
Journey by boat, Cajun style, through the heart of South Louisiana's swamplands. Experience a real-life adventure for the whole family from the comfort of our swamp boat. Tour back into the meandering bayous and into the past, filled with the daring exploits of pirates and Indians made famous through story and song. The present is filled with moss-draped cypress trees, fascinating plant life and many creatures who make their homes here. Your guide is a native of the area who will share with you the legends and the lore of Louisiana's still untamed wilderness. Day 7 – Alabama
Board the Crescent service early this morning to arrive in Birmingham, Alabama mid-afternoon. 2-night stay in Birmingham.
Day 8 – The Civil Rights Movement
“It has been said that Birmingham is the last major Southern city in America, where a friendly "How y'all doin'," a hearty meal of country-fried steak with butter beans and a true taste of Southern hospitality await visitors.” Tripadvisor
To learn about the 1963 watershed moment in the Civil Rights Movement which took place in Birmingham visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, and take a walking tour around the heritage trail where more than 200 signs, covering 70 significant sites, tell the story of what happened more than 50 years ago. Trail/signs are installed on public pavements and within public parks, where historic Birmingham protests occurred.
Day 9 – The Crescent
Spend the morning exploring Birmingham before boarding the Crescent for the overnight journey to Baltimore.
Day 10 – Baltimore
Arrive in Baltimore mid-morning. Frances Glessner Lee’s collection of creepy dollhouses are not accessible to the public (though anyone who can demonstrate a professional interest may arrange a private viewing). The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum may be a less frightening way to spend the day. Anyone with an interest in baseball will want to visit the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
Day 11 – The Final Leg
Board an Amtrak service to New York, there are frequent services through the day so tell us when you would prefer to make the two to three hour journey. Stay 3 nights in New York.
Days 12 & 13 – New York, New York
We include a New York CityPASS which includes The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Empire State Building Experience and American Museum of Natural History plus either Top of the Rock Observation Deck OR Guggenheim Museum, Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island OR Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises and 9/11 Memorial & Museum OR Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
Day 14 – Fly home
Spend the day in New York before transferring the airport at tea time for an overnight flight back to the UK, arriving the following morning.
